Attendance at this conference can last more than one day. Those registering this conference will become eligible to join an online community of people interested in the use of technology for teaching and promoting a love of history.
Below are some of the locations you may visit on your field trips during the conference!
What if instead of talking about history, we could experience it?
What if, instead of looking at photos or drawings of historical sites, we could walk into and through them?
What if, instead of reading the words of a Lincoln or a Ghandi, we could hear them speak?
The technology of virtual worlds is opening up a new universe of possibilities in promoting and teaching a love of history. The "Stepping into History" conference is your chance to learn about, and experience for yourself, the power of virtual worlds at the service of history.
The "Stepping into History" Conference will take place on June 10, 2008 and again on June 24th. It will be held entirely in the virtual world of Second Life. The cost of the conference is $45.00. To learn more about the conference,or to register, see the links at left.
The June 10th date is currently full. We are still accepting registrations for the second date, June 24, 2008, The schedule and agenda for the conference are expected to be identical.
This conference is designed for educators, museum staff, historical association members and staff, or anyone who is dedicated to promoting a respect for history.
You may attend this conference in one of two ways. The most effective way is to actually enter the virtual world of Second Life. By doing this, you will be able to fully participate in the conference, including exploring historical simulations on your own. A Second Life account is free, although Second Life does not run well on all computers. An orientation for new Second Life users will be included in the conference fee. To learn more or to set up a Second Life account, go to Second Life
A second choice, for those whose computers will not support Second Life or who prefer not to have to learn the program, is to attend through an Adobe Connect room. Using this method, you will "tag along" with an actual participant, seeing what they see and attending the sessions along with them. This method does not allow for as full an experience, but it is an excellent option for those who would like to attend but do not have time or inclination to create a Second Life account. This method also allows a group to participate in all or part of the conference through use of a video projector. (Separate fees apply for group participation.)
